Is Business Blogging a Good Idea?
While doing some online research one thing strikes me, on the very first page of Google most of the links come are blogs, if searching engine is giving preference to these blogs rather than a business websites it can be very useful for business, and after doing a bit of research a come to know how beneficial is the business blogging for business.
Blogs encourage feedback and deepen customer relationships
A weblog is basically on online diary. Entries don’t have to be official and can be any length you want. Diaries are appealing to readers as they are both candid and revealing.
By maintaining a blog, a business can have a no-hassle one-to-one conversation with its customers whenever it feels like it. Customers are also able to ‘post’ their opinions in response to a blog entry, building a sense of community.
Blogs rank higher in search engine results
From an SEO perspective, blog posts are generally ranked higher by Google and other search engines than static web pages. This is because blog content is normally updated more frequently and often contains links to relevant resources.
Blogs demonstrate expertise
A blog gives a small business the opportunity to demonstrate its expertise in a given area. It’s also a forum to listen to feedback. I know that I am much more likely to do business with someone and be loyal to a brand that I think is listening to me. How about you?
Easy Web Publishing Solution: Blog software is easy to use. Simply write your thoughts, link to resources, and publish to your blog, all at the push of a few buttons. Blog software companies such as TypePad or Blogger.com offer easy blogging tools to get started. Updating the weblog is a faster process than contacting a web designer with changes or doing the coding and uploading yourself.
Lower Costs: Blogging is a low-cost alternative to having a web presence. For small business owners without the time to learn web html or the money to hire a designer/developer, blogging offers an inexpensive method to get your company’s name out on the Internet.

Good post. But why not follow up with the downsides. Why do you suppose blogs are still not widely used in business?

Yes Richard… it is true, business blogging is not as much as popular in UK and EU as compaire to US because i belive their might be some digital rights issues or due to legislation in Britain and the EU or might some of the business think this is new idea it might work or not and they don’t want to try new thing. Or their might be another reason that some of the business think if they will get negative response from some customers on their blogs it might create negative impact on other as everybody can see other’s comment on blogging. so we can’t comment Specifically what is the reason that blogs are not widely used instead of so many benifits……..

Blogs are a great and easy way to get yourself exposed. Do people still see blogs are a indivudual activity instead of a ‘corporate business’ tool? Is that why business are slow to adopt? I run a search on graphic and web designing companies in Leeds, only two of them had a corporate blog. SAD!

As the CEO of a software company that focuses only on the Corporate and Business Blogging market. I’d like to take a shot at addressing some of the above comments with regard to adoption.
One of the big reasons that business has not adopted blogging is that the tools are inadequate. The typical blogging software is designed for individual “citizen journalist”, not actual businesses.
Some examples include control and compliance. Corporations have a responsibility and liability to control every syllable of content that appears to be associated with them. We see clients that want to have lot’s of employee and customer involvement but the solutions mentioned offer no method to manage approvals, edits, etc… Forrester cites ‘Fear’ (which means lack of control) as one of the main reasons corporations don’t blog.
Another huge reason has to do with ROI. If it can’t be measured many organizations find it difficult to justify investment in either time or financial resources.
Our clients measure ROI on Search Engine Optimization as as such we include a complete analytics package so that the ROI of blogging becomes clear.
Additionally, most blogging software organizes content around Authors. This works for journalism, but not for SEO and not for Topic driven business need. Content needs to be organized around keywords based on what people are searching for to be a truly effective business asset.
